Description

Six requests for review of the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan were submitted following the implementation of the plan in September 2012. A review panel was appointed in June 2014 to consider the six review requests and to provide recommendations to the Government of Alberta. As part of their work, the panel could request further information to permit a full and satisfactory understanding of the matters in the review. This record contains the panel's fourth request for information, directed to the Government of Alberta. It also includes the response received to the information request and several replies to the government response that were received from other parties involved in the review request under consideration.

Alberta enjoys a wealth of natural features that can be seen in the diversity of our landscapes. They vary from hot, dry badlands to vast, unbroken forests, to alpine tundra and massive ice fields. The challenge for Albertans is to continue to designate and secure land that will represent the variety of these landscapes within the province. This report provides an overview of the land classification system that is used to describe our natural landscapes and that also serves as a tool to help measure our progress towards completing a network of protected areas. Land classification for protected areas is based on natural or biogeographic features such as geology, landform, soils and hydrology. Other factors affecting classification include an area’s climate, vegetation and wildlife. The classification system is set up so that larger, more general categories of land are identified and then divided into smaller units on the basis of their natural characteristics.

The North Saskatchewan Regional Advisory Council was appointed by Cabinet to provide strategic advice in the development of the North Saskatchewan Regional Plan. In its advice submitted to the government in December 2014, the council provided 69 recommendations in six topic areas: managing wetlands and lakes as part of watershed management; supporting biodiversity in the region; inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in land-use planning; community growth and community land-use planning; management of outdoor recreation; and economic development.

The North Saskatchewan Regional Advisory Council was established in July 2014 to provide strategic advice to Cabinet regarding the development of the North Saskatchewan Regional Plan.
