Description

Each year the ministry coordinates a survey of Albertans on topics related to the work of the ministry. Topics covered in the various surveys include: arts and culture, volunteering, cultural industries, heritage sites, gender-based violence, and recreation and sport. Results provide insight into emerging trends, help monitor the effectiveness of programs and services and inform decisions by enhancing the Government of Alberta's understanding of the needs of Albertans.

Results from aerial mountain goat population surveys conducted in the Willmore Wilderness Park from June 23-July 12, 2021. The objective of the surveys was to inform the status of mountain goat populations in the Northwest Region which have traditionally supported licensed or unlicensed harvest and four complexes where declines have resulted in very small populations with high conservation risk.

Results from aerial ungulate surveys conducted on February 5-7 and 9-10, 2020 in all known bighorn sheep winter ranges in wildlife management units 328, 414, 418, 420, 422, 426, 428, 429, 430, 432, 434, 734 (Ghost Wilderness Area) and 738 (White Goat). This report summarizes the results of the 2020 winter survey on provincial lands. Details on the Banff Park survey are reported separately.

Environmental assessment registry documents pertaining to the proposed Stone Creek Resorts Inc. Gondola project. The proposal is to construct and operate an aerial passenger ropeway system along with a day lodge, trail networks, viewing platforms, suspension bridge and associated utility services infrastructure as part of the Silvertip Integrated Village Resort. The proposed passenger aerial gondola would connect the base area of the Silvertip Resort to an upper terminal on the summit ridge of Mount Lady MacDonald, via a mid-station integrated with the Silvertip Resort Village. The objective of the survey was to assess the status of the elk population by determining population size and age-sex composition. Additionally updated population numbers will be used to confirm the progress of elk hunting in controlling population growth.

Specific objectives were to determine a population estimate, population ratio for sex and age classes, a density estimate for moose and mule deer, and a directed total count for elk in WMU 359.
