Description

This report summarizes traditional knowledge and traditional land use information from the South Saskatchewan and Milk River Basins in southern Alberta. It was prepared to provide background information during the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan process. Traditional cultures managed and thrived in the highly seasonal environment of southern Alberta. A detailed, highly developed and thorough knowledge of the natural environment was required to sustain the economy and culture of indigenous people. The report uses examples of important plant and animal resources and sites to illustrate and demonstrate the breadth and depth of knowledge and information required by First Nations, and particularly Blackfoot, peoples concerns regarding air quality issues, it has become apparent that air issues should be considered in developing a comprehensive regional plan for the SSR.

Description

Cottonwood Consultants Ltd. of Calgary was contracted by Alberta Environment to undertake a natural history inventory at Grizzly Ridge Wildland Park in the Swan Hills area of north-central Alberta. No previous comprehensive natural history studies have been carried out on fauna and flora in the area. The 2000-2001 study included a literature review, a multi-season field inventory, and aerial photograph/biophysical map interpretation (including GIS mapping). The objectives of the project were to: conduct an ecological land classification and define ecological units; produce a bird and mammal inventory of the park; identify and describe special features and sensitive and disturbed areas in the park; provide GIS files and hardcopy maps of the ecological land classification; and provide a report describing the ecological characteristics and special features of the area.

Description

Dillberry Lake Provincial Park is located along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border in east central Alberta. The landscape is represented predominantly by undulating to hummocky terrain with slopes ranging on average from 2 - 20%, and occasionally as high as 75%, overlain primarily by coarse glaciofluvial and eolian sediments of Pleistocene origin. The northern part of the Park consists of glaciofluvial ice contact landforms marked by numerous pothole lakes (or kettles) which typify knob and kettle terrain. In the southern part, these coarse deposits have been reworked by wind creating eolian sand dunes, which for the most part have stabilized over time. Currently, active blowouts are evident in some areas amongst the dunes. Small areas of coarse to fine lacustrine sediments are found exposed around the shorelines of lakes located in the Park.

Description

The methodology of environmental impact analyses incorporates the principle of subjective assessment of the impacts of the separate actions which comprise the project upon various factors of the environment. The significant factors relating to effects on the physical and chemical characteristics of the northern Alberta environment as a result of potential oil sands development in the Athabasca tar sands were documented according to the "Procedure for Evaluating Environmental Impact" - Geological Survey Circular 645. The text of this impact report was based on the sum of magnitude and importance vectors being equal to or greater than 5 for any specific sector of the physical and chemical environment. This report and possible computer data adaptation may provide for additional summation and recommendation of specific actions incurred by oil sands development as these proposals further relate to biological and cultural aspects of the environment.
