The Plan for Parks is a 10-year blueprint for guiding management of Alberta's parks system to ensure sustainability of the province’s natural landscapes, enhance recreational opportunities, and improve quality of life for Albertans. This update lists the key accomplishments achieved since the Plan was introduced in 2009.

This document provides a framework for the overall management of OH Ranch Heritage Rangeland for a ten-year period commencing on the approval date of this plan. This management plan and the direction it contains applies to the public land within OH Ranch Heritage Rangeland. This document has been developed in coordination and consultation with all of the partners involved in OH Ranch Heritage Rangeland management. Management direction specific to the private land under conservation easement is contained in the approved conservation easement agreements registered on the title of those lands. The management direction for the private land under conservation easement agreements was developed to be complimentary and consistent with the management direction of this management plan.

There is a small area Parkland Natural Region that is located in the northwest corner of Alberta along the banks of the Peace River. During 2005 and 2006 I began surveying Lepidoptera in this area. The habitat targeted was the Peace River Parkland Subregion that consists of open grassland with aspen bluffs. The following is a list of 503 species representing 38 different families.

Cypress Hills Provincial Park contains many natural and cultural values that contribute to a unique ecology in the province and a diversity of attractions for park visitors. However, The current age and composition of the vegetation combined with frequent fire weather conditions create the potential for a catastrophic wildfire in the park that would put significant values at risk. This report addresses the evolution of wildfire as a historic and fundamental agent of forest and grassland renewal and evaluates the current wildfire threat to both human and ecological values. It finds that aggressive fire and forest management commitments are required to protect both human and ecological values in both the short term and long term in Cypress Hill Provincial Park, and a summary of fire and forest management strategies is presented in the conclusion of the report.

Description

A rare lichen survey was conducted in selected areas of Pigeon Lake Provincial Park (PLPP) from October 14 to 18, 2008. The main objective of the survey was to document the occurrence of rare lichens and mitigate possible damage as a result of infrastructure upgrade activities, including the expansion of old camp stalls, creation of new camp stalls, shower buildings, a new boat launch and some additional tree and shrub clearings. The park is located approximately 25 km west of Wetaskiwin, Alberta and is accessed by Hwy 13. It falls within the Central Parkland, a subregion of the Parkland Natural Region of Alberta, characterized by aspen (Populus tremuloides) and balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera) stands (Kershaw et al. 2001). These stands form the main vegetation community of PLPP (Kershaw et al. 2001) and are typically known for not supporting high lichen numbers as it is often too dry.

Description

This report documents the collection of spiders (Arachnida, Araneae) during a 2004 survey of Birch Mountains Wildland Provincial Park (representative of Alberta’s Upper Boreal Highlands Subregion). A total of 6,211 identifiable specimens were collected. These represented 185 species within 17 families. Most species were common residents of the boreal forest. New linyphiid records for Alberta were Lophomma vaccinii, Tapinocyba bicarinata, Tunagyna debilis, and Wabasso cacuminatus. Likely undescribed species belong to the genera Hypsosinga (Araneidae), Ceratinops (Linyphiidae) and Oreonetides (Linyphiidae). A few updates and corrections of species names are given for three other reports on spiders from north-eastern Alberta.

Three factors were considered in selecting Moose Lake Provincial Park as a study area for collecting Lepidoptera in 2005. There is a wide diversity of habitats within the park. There was a lack of literature on Lepidoptera for the park. And the park is close to the Saskatchewan border. These three factors show clearly why there was a need to study Lepidoptera in the park, and why the odds of finding new species for the Province of Alberta would be likely. In 2006, the same factors were in play and results were much better. In 2005 many common species were collected that were also observed in 2006. Efforts were made to avoid collecting these same species. In 2006, 5 butterflies and 202 moth species were collected. Of the Lepidoptera collected, approximately ten need further analysis for complete identification. It is highly likely that two or more of these specimens will be identified as new species for the Province of Alberta. I would be very interested in seeing someone continue...

The purpose of the lepidoptera survey in Willmore WP was to provide an annotated summary of the species that occur within the park, including notes on such parameters as relative abundance, distribution patterns, range extensions and any other relevant biological or behavioural information. This information will contribute towards an increased understanding of the species occurring in the park as well as in a broader context of Alberta.

Description

Inventory research, starting in 1999 and continuing through 2007, has been carried out on the moths of eleven major study areas in south‐central Alberta. With the exception of a semi‐urban site in Erskine, all sites were in areas where the vegetation had been relatively undisturbed. Realizing that about 95% of the Aspen Parkland has been disturbed by agriculture or other activities, and some of the remainder will soon be disturbed, the purpose of the research was to document the native moth biodiversity while there was still time to do so.
