Description

Excavations in 2015 at EePj-103, Margaret’s Site, revealed a stratified Protohistoric and Historic Period site. A unique feature of this site is that it has two stratigraphically separate protohistoric occupations, neither of which are mixed with earlier Precontact Period materials nor later Historic Period materials. EePj-103 also has later Historic Period occupations, at least one of which is associated with the Domburg Ranch, established in 1889, and represented today by the remnants of sandstone building foundations. EePj-103 is uniquely positioned to help answer important research questions about the Protohistoric Period in southern Alberta, particularly those related to changing technology with the introduction of European trade goods. The historic ranch remains also represent a very early period in the settlement of Alberta after the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway. During mitigative and exploratory studies undertaken at the FM Ranch Campsite (EfPk-1) in 2015, near-surface geophysical assessment was implemented to help focus archaeological and geoarchaeological studies in a selected area of the site. The purpose of the study was to locate culturally-derived combustion features (such as hearths) using magnetic detection methods prior to excavation, in order to maximize the potential for recovery of cultural data that are usually associated with these types of features. Analysis of the results of this work illustrated some shortcomings of the gradiometer method, and an alternative geophysical magnetic assessment method that would be more suitable for investigating the majority of archaeological features found in North America is suggested. During the Southern Alberta Flood Investigation Program, a total of 72 radiocarbon dates were obtained from 23 archaeological sites. Radiocarbon dates submitted too late to be incorporated into final reports account for 65 per cent of the dates and are presented here. This paper provides a summary and evaluation of all radiocarbon dates for the Flood Investigation Program. Part of the 37th volume of the Archaeological Survey of Alberta Occasional Paper series, which contains 18 articles exploring multiple facets of the impact on archaeological resources of the 2013 flood in southern Alberta.

Natural ecological communities are defined as recurring assemblages of plant species; the species occurring together because they respond similarly to a variety of site attributes (Grossman et al 1994). The species that make up the assemblage often show an affinity or association with each other (Kent and Coker 1992). To develop an initial tracking list of natural ecological community elements, publications describing vegetation in Alberta were reviewed and discussions were held with knowledgeable individuals. Community types that have been described as 'unusual', 'uncommon', 'of limited extent' or 'encountered infrequently' by vegetation experts were considered for inclusion on the Ecological Community Tracking List. Community types that have been described as 'in decline' or 'threatened' by vegetation experts were also considered for inclusion. Only natural communities were considered. Rochon Sands Provincial Park, on the south side of Buffalo Lake in south-central Alberta, is located 24 km northwest of Stettler. Ecologically it is found in the Aspen Parkland. These studies, conducted annually between 2006 and 2009 and again in 2011, present information on the distribution and status of lepidopteran (moth and butterfly) species in the park.

While most of the larger (macromoths) are relatively well known, the same cannot be said for many of the smaller micromoths. Identifications, especially of the latter, can, at times, be difficult or are at present impossible, until such time as revisionary studies are made. Also, genitalic dissection and examination is necessary for positive identification in some groups. For these reasons, some of the determinations found herein should be regarded as tentative. The scientific names of the species are followed by the day-month-year of the collection and the number of individuals mounted; an “SR” indicates a sight record. Common names are mentioned in those cases where such names exist.

The writer, now retired and living in Erskine, Alberta, has had a long-time interest in the natural flora and fauna of the province. In the spring of 2000, he commenced an examination of the moths of south-central Alberta, the purpose of which was to document the species present in various natural areas. He is a member of the Alberta Lepidopterist’s Guild, the purpose of which is to encourage the study of Alberta’s moths and butterflies. There is still much to be learned about the distribution and status of lepidopteran (moth and butterfly) species in south-central Alberta. Baseline studies provide information that helps characterize those species associated with various ecoregions, in the present case Prairie; determine status designations (abundant, common, rare, endangered) of various species; and allow the examination of many other parameters, including phenology, dry vs. wet years, and outbreaks of various species such as forest tent caterpillars.

The present paper incorporates the information in last year’s report along with that gathered in 2011. It also includes a number of redeterminations and additions to the information in the earlier reports Further, it follows the up-to-date order and taxonomy of Pohl et al. (2010), rather than that of Hodges et al. (1983). The author and his wife purchased the present 1.1 acre, 2 lot site in 1992. The property was developed and the house was built around 1978. The address of the house is Lot 5, Maple Close. The coordinates are 52.322, 112.883 and the elevation is 830 m. Erskine is a small village with a population of less than 500 individuals.

There is a small area Parkland Natural Region that is located in the northwest corner of Alberta along the banks of the Peace River. During 2005 and 2006 I began surveying Lepidoptera in this area. The habitat targeted was the Peace River Parkland Subregion that consists of open grassland with aspen bluffs. The following is a list of 503 species representing 38 different families.
