Description

The Turner Valley gas plant site, used for many decades for petroleum production and refining, was decommissioned after 1985 and was designated as a historic site in 1995. The objectives of the groundwater monitoring program were to: verify that known contaminants on site are not reaching the Sheep River; establish seasonal variation in flow and quality in the surface and groundwater regimes; and to provide information to be used in restoring and reclaiming the historic site in an environmentally effective way.

The economic data in this report are based on the 2003/04 fiscal year April 1 to March 31. These data are gathered from surveys given to visitors to the museums, historic sites and interpretive centres managed by the Government of Alberta. The primary role of these facilities is to preserve and tell the natural and cultural history of Alberta - to both Albertans and visitors to the Province. Over 100,000 school children receive educational programs in these facilities each year. The economic benefit of these services is impossible to estimate but the long-term societal benefit of museums and historic sites, to a region, is well understood. A secondary role of these facilities is to attract visitors from outside the province and to encourage Albertans to travel within the province. Tourist destinations generate economic activity. This annotated bibliography is designed as a research tool for Quaternarists interested in Beringia and adjacent areas. Beringia comprises the northern hemisphere region centred on Siberia and Alaska-Yukon and bounded by the Lena River to the west and the Mackenzie River to the east. Other areas covered in this volume include western Siberia, northeasten China, northern Korea, and Japan. The bibliography includes references to research papers, books, monographs, short notes, theses, conference abstracts, conference reports, popular articles, and commentaries published between 1950 and 1993. The citations deal with surficial geology, glacial history, climate history, palaeontology, archaeology, and palaeoenvironments in Beringia between about 50,000 and 10,000 years before the present.
