The listing of historic resources identifies lands that contain or are believed to contain historic resources, including primarily archaeological and palaeontological sites, Indigenous traditional use sites of a historic resource nature, and historic structures. Issued twice a year, it provides industry and other developers with advance notification of possible historic resource concerns. [See "Related" for a link to instructions for use.]

The listing of historic resources is a tool that may assist developers, industry representatives and municipalities in determining if a proposed development might affect historic resources. The listing identifies lands that contain or have a high potential to contain historic resources, including archaeological sites, palaeontological sites, Aboriginal traditional use sites of a historic resource nature, or historic sites and structures. This guide provides information on how to interpret and use the data in the listing.

The presence of historic structures within the footprint of a proposed development project may trigger a requirement for documentation of historic structures. Additionally, historic structures may be encountered while investigations are being undertaken for another type of historic resource (e.g., archaeology). Heritage consultants are to take an inclusive approach and provide adequate documentation for all historic structures within a project area. The Turner Valley gas plant site, used for many decades for petroleum production and refining, was decommissioned after 1985 and was designated as a historic site in 1995. A reclamation program was implemented for the redevelopment of the site. As part of the reclamation program, a groundwater containment and treatment system was constructed to contain and treat impacted groundwater. The objectives of the 2017 monitoring and sampling programs were to evaluate the groundwater quality at selected areas of the historical gas plant and the performance of the containment wall and treatment corridor.

Excavations in 2015 at EePj-103, Margaret’s Site, revealed a stratified Protohistoric and Historic Period site. A unique feature of this site is that it has two stratigraphically separate protohistoric occupations, neither of which are mixed with earlier Precontact Period materials nor later Historic Period materials. EePj-103 also has later Historic Period occupations, at least one of which is associated with the Domburg Ranch, established in 1889, and represented today by the remnants of sandstone building foundations. EePj-103 is uniquely positioned to help answer important research questions about the Protohistoric Period in southern Alberta, particularly those related to changing technology with the introduction of European trade goods. The historic ranch remains also represent a very early period in the settlement of Alberta after the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
