Description

This Alberta Official Statistic describes the proportions of Aboriginal Identity population by Mother Tongue (English, French, Aboriginal Languages and Other Languages) for Canada, Provinces and Territories based on the 2011 National Household Survey. Between May and August 2011, Statistics Canada conducted the National Household Survey (NHS) for the first time. This voluntary, self-administered survey was introduced as a replacement for the long census questionnaire, also known as Census Form 2B. The NHS is designed to collect social and economic data about the Canadian population.

This Alberta Official Statistic describes the proportion of immigrants that reside in each of the eight Alberta economic regions based on the 2011 National Household Survey. Canada is a multicultural society whose ethnocultural make-up has been shaped over time by immigrants and their descendants. Each new wave of immigration has added to the nation’s ethnic and cultural composition. Over time, patterns of immigration have shifted. Historically, most immigrants came from Europe. More recently, the largest group of newcomers to Canada has come from Asia (including the Middle East).

This Alberta Official Statistic describes the proportions of Aboriginal Identity Populations (Movers) that reported a mobility status change (place of residence 5 years ago) for Alberta and its Census Metropolitan Areas. Mobility status refers to the relationship between a person’s usual place of residence on Census day (May 10, 2011) and his or her place of residence five years earlier (May 10, 2006). “Movers” are those who reported a change of address. There are two types of “Movers”: “Non-Migrants” and “Migrants”. “Migrants” are classified into “External Migrants” and “Internal Migrants”, which are further categorized into “Intraprovincial Migrants” and “Interprovincial Migrants”.

This Alberta Official Statistic describes the marital status of Alberta’s census families by economic regions for the 2011 census year. Alberta is divided into eight economic regions as follows: Lethbridge – Medicine -Hat; Camrose-Drumheller; Calgary; Banff – Jasper – Rocky Mountain House; Red Deer; Edmonton; Athabasca – Grande Prairie – Peace River; and Wood Buffalo – Cold Lake. This Alberta Official Statistic describes the marital status of Albertans by these economic regions based on the 2011 population census. The graph describes six marital statuses categorized as ’married (and not separated)’, ‘living common-law’, ‘single (never legally married)’, ‘separated’, ‘divorced’ and ‘widowed’.

This Alberta Official Statistic compares the family structure of Canadian census families in all provinces and territories for the 2011 census year. Family structure refers to the combination of relatives that comprise a family. Census family refers to a married couple (with or without children of either and/or both spouses), a common-law couple (with or without children of either and/or both partners) or a lone parent of any marital status, with at least one child. A couple may be of opposite sex or same sex. A couple family with children may be further classified as either an intact family in which all children are the biological and/or adopted children of both married spouses or of both common-law partners or a stepfamily with at least one biological or adopted child of only one married spouse or common-law partner and whose birth or adoption preceded the current relationship.

Immigrants are persons who are, or have ever been, landed immigrants in Canada. A landed immigrant/permanent resident is a person who has been granted the right to live permanently in Canada by immigration authorities. Some immigrants have resided in Canada for a number of years, while others have arrived recently. Some immigrants are Canadian citizens, while others are not. Most immigrants are born outside Canada, but a small number are born in Canada. In the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS), 'Immigrants' includes immigrants who landed in Canada prior to May 10, 2011.
