This template was developed by Alberta Education with the advice and input of First Nations and Métis elders, community experts and teachers to assist school authorities in the development of First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) language and culture course outlines. The template can be used and adapted as necessary so that a locally developed course outline meets the needs and requirements associated with the focus language and culture in the community.

This document is designed to provide assessment materials for specific Grade 6 outcomes in the Cree Language and Culture Nine-year Program, Grades 4–5–6. The assessment materials are designed for the beginner level in the context of teaching for communicative competence. Grade 6 learning outcomes from the Cree Language and Culture Nine-year Program, Grades 4–5–6 provided the basis for the development of the performance tasks and accompanying evaluation tools in this document. These assessment materials are intended to be closely linked to classroom practices and are aligned to the general and specific learner outcomes for Grade 6.

This guide will provide teachers with the tools needed to plan a successful Cree language experience in your classroom. The teachers will choose appropriate activities with their students from the Sample Teaching and Learning Activities. The activities are divided into four sections: Applications, Language Competence, Community Membership and Strategies. Each section has its own emphasis. It is advisable to integrate activities from all four sections when preparing year, unit and lesson plans.
