This plan was developed jointly by the Forestry Division of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development and the Parks Division of Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation. It was developed as part of a formal agreement by these two agencies to co-operate in forest genetic resource conservation and in response to a request by the Alberta Forest Genetic Resources Council, who had identified as an issue, the need for a provincial forest tree gene resource conservation plan. The plan is a technical document intended to complement and align with existing policy, particularly the Standards for Tree Improvement in Alberta. It provides a framework, including concepts for tree gene conservation and an initial work plan for implementing, coordinating and maintaining a provincial network of in situ reserves for 28 native Alberta tree species.
