Description

Rochon Sands Provincial Park, on the south side of Buffalo Lake in south-central Alberta, is located 24 km northwest of Stettler. Ecologically it is found in the Aspen Parkland. These studies, conducted annually between 2006 and 2009 and again in 2011, present information on the distribution and status of lepidopteran (moth and butterfly) species in the park.

While most of the larger (macromoths) are relatively well known, the same cannot be said for many of the smaller micromoths. Identifications, especially of the latter, can, at times, be difficult or are at present impossible, until such time as revisionary studies are made. Also, genitalic dissection and examination is necessary for positive identification in some groups. For these reasons, some of the determinations found herein should be regarded as tentative. The scientific names of the species are followed by the day-month-year of the collection and the number of individuals mounted; an “SR” indicates a sight record. Common names are mentioned in those cases where such names exist.

An ecological survey of the Park by Kondla & Smith (1972) came up with an impressive 148 species of birds, 25 of mammals, and 225 of flowering plants. Later studies by Wallis (1977), Nordstrom and Wilkinson (1980), Campbell (1983) and Lohr (1993) have added to these totals. The present report incorporates all information in the earlier reports (Bird 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005) as well as making a few corrections and adding new information based on studies carried out in 2005.

Switzer Provincial Park and to mitigate possible damage as a result of trail maintenance activities, including the creation of new trail segments, mechanical brushing and gravelling, and site clearing.

Description

No rare plant species or special plant communities were observed during the spring rare vascular plant survey. Two potentially rare species observed along the Jarvis Lake Trails should be rechecked later in the season to determine to the species level. The level of confidence in locating rare plants is a function of the time spent searching, plus appropriate season. The late May 2007 rare plant survey was early for detection of rare plant species; most flowering plants were just emerging from the ground and early-flowering species such as willows were in some cases, not even out yet in leaf. None of the habitats encountered were considered unique or unusual, based on the literature review, expected and known element occurrences in the project area or region, plus professional judgement by the botanist conducting the rare plant survey. Recommended mitigation measures are indicated by site, in the aforementioned sections.

Description

Miquelon Lake Provincial Park is a high use park in the Edmonton region and most of the campground and office infrastructure was very old and run down. As a result, Miquelon is undergoing a major capital upgrade with the addition of a new park centre. Most of the work within the strict Facility Zone has already been done or is underway, with little disturbance to natural vegetation. However, there are other areas of the park planned to be disturbed where native vegetation (including bryophytes and lichens) may include species listed on ANHIC Tracking Lists. This focused bryophyte and lichen survey was conducted to determine if such rare species do exist within the proposed footprints so that disturbance can be avoided or at least the impact mitigated.

A list of lichens that occurred in ten surveyed sites of William A Switzer Provincial Park was compiled and rare lichens that occurred in these sites were assessed following the protocol of ANHIC for rare plants. Rare lichens found in the park were: Baeomyces rufus, Collema subflaccidum, Leptogium lichenoides, Physconia perisidiosa, Ramalina dilacerata, R. intermedia and R. sinensis.

Description

Insect collecting was targeted to the major ecotypes within the park. Many people contributed specimens for this study. Most arthropods collected were preserved in 70% ethanol or killed and placed in envelopes. Specimens were sorted and dispersed to other researchers to identify and curate. Spiders were field sorted, discarding debris and numbers of apparently common species. Material was sorted further in the lab, and again numbers of very common species were discarded. Specimens deemed of interest were pinned and labeled or repackaged in fresh vials of 70% alcohol. Non-beetle samples were passed on to other workers – spiders to D. Buckle, dragonflies to D. Macaulay, and butterflies and moths to D. Lawrie. The beetles are the focus of this report. The remaining insects, flies, bees, wasps, bugs and grasshoppers were sorted and vouchers pinned. They are catalogued in a separate report.

The main goal of this portion of the study was to compile an inventory of the bird species present in the Kakwa Wildland Provincial Park. An attempt was made to determine the breeding status for each of the species through behavioural observations and/or subsequent observations such as nests or young. Habitat associations were recorded as well as a measure of relative abundance. All species recorded herein were encountered either in June or July 2006.
