Description

The Turner Valley gas plant site, used for many decades for petroleum production and refining, was decommissioned after 1985 and was designated as a historic site in 1995. A reclamation program was implemented for the redevelopment of the site. As part of the reclamation program, a groundwater containment and treatment system was constructed to contain and treat impacted groundwater. The objectives of the 2012 monitoring and sampling programs were to evaluate the groundwater quality at selected areas of the historical gas plant and the performance of the containment wall and treatment corridor.

This report presents the final results of the 1984 field season at the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump site, which represents the second season of archaeological research by the staff of Alberta Culture at this World Heritage Site. This multi-year research project is designed to undertake mitigative investigations preparatory to the installation of an interpretive centre and attendant facilities, as well as to conduct research oriented studies which will provide some of the information required to assemble an interpretive programme for the site. The majority of the 1984 field season was devoted to the research-oriented objectives of the project which have been focused on the-poorly understood campsite deposits located on the prairie flats below the kill site deposits. Excavations conducted at the Ross site in southeastern Alberta during 1981 yielded considerable quantities of data with scientifically significant results. These investigations were required at this high-value prehistoric stone circle site because it was to be impacted by a proposed housing subdivision in Medicine Hat. Ethos Consultants Ltd. conducted the excavation by focusing on specific objectives developed from a previous assessment program. These investigations yielded evidence of at least three prehistoric occupations, with the principal occupation dated to about 500 AD. The report suggests that the site is one of the most significant stone circle sites yet investigated in Alberta and possibly in all of the Northern Plains.

Presents a collection of archaeological studies seeking to understand the characteristics of the prehistory of the mountains and foothills that form the Eastern Slopes along the Rocky Mountains. The papers are organized in a geographical cline from south to north, with those having a more region-wide perspective being retained for the latter portions of the volume. Although considerably greater numbers of studies have been conducted in the southern half of the region, this volume contains a roughly equal number of papers based on data generated north of the Bow River valley. In some cases, these constitute the first published record of that work.

Archaeologists have interpreted these changes in various ways, which are explored in this manuscript.

This document constitutes the final report of archaeological activities during the 1983 field season by staff of Alberta Culture at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. The site has been identified by the provincial government or the development of an on-site public interpretive program. One of the primary purposes was to conduct archaeological studies of the site areas where development would cause surface disturbance, such as parking lots, access roads, the building site and smaller related facilities. A second purpose in initiating a multi-year archaeological project at the site was to begin acquiring information about the site which is not available from previous studies and which is necessary to the interpretive program planned for the site.

The Eaglenest Portage Site (alternately referred to by the briefer Borden designation, HkPa 4), is a large site located in the Birch Mountains region of northeastern Alberta. Extensive excavations aimed at obtaining a glimpse of the spatial structure of artifact distributions on the site were carried out during the summer of 1976. An assemblage dominated by simple flake tools and debitage was recovered. The site has been occupied over the last two millenia and comparisons have been made with assemblages from the areas North and East of the Birch Mountains.

Archaeological studies at this site were initiated in response to the planned construction of a residential subdivision in northwest Calgary. The results of the excavation demonstrated a significant interpretive potential associated with the depressional features on Nose Hill. Gaps in the archaeological record, as expressed in the Hawkwood site (primarily of the Tuxana Tradition), are known to be present elsewhere on the uplands north of Calgary and represent a significant asset to future generations of archaeologists.
