Description

The miyo resource discusses foundational beliefs and approaches of Indigenous peoples to promote well-being and resiliency and outlines an evaluative process that honours an Indigenous worldview. This resource supports provincial implementation of the Well-Being and Resiliency Framework by outlining an evaluative framework that recognizes culturally-based practice and assesses program effectiveness and the achievement of outcomes in a meaningful way. The miyo resource was developed recognizing that western-based evaluation practices are generally not effective when working with Indigenous communities. It includes a model for service delivery and outcome and performance measurement that accurately and culturally assesses the impact and value of culturally designed services provided by and for Indigenous client populations.

Description

In March 2003, Alberta Education began preparatory work for the First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) School-Community Learning Environment Project to address a recognized achievement gap between FNMI and non FNMI learners. Implementation of the project occurred during the 2004-05 school year with the objective of addressing the needs of FNMI learners in sixteen pilot schools across Alberta. A collaborative approach among school staffs, Aboriginal parents, Elders, jurisdiction leaders, Alberta Education, and Aboriginal communities resulted in the implementation of a wide variety of innovative practices designed to improve FNMI student outcomes at individual pilot schools. The FNMI School-Community Learning Environment Project - Promising Practices Report (2007) highlights these promising practices in light of current research. The focal point of Aboriginal Studies 10–20–30 is the wealth and diverse nature of Aboriginal languages and cultures. The program of studies explores concepts within the students’ own unique context. It is intended to provide a conceptual framework for all learners to enhance understanding of the diverse Aboriginal cultures within their region, Canada and the world. The term “Aboriginal” refers to First Nations, Métis and Inuit.
