This infographic explains the process followed for becoming a community timber program member and for applying for a community timber permit. Like commercial timber permits, the community timber permit sets terms and conditions that must be met before harvest operations can begin. Community timber permit programs allow the timber volume sold to remain focused on generating economic benefits among the local members of the Coniferous Community Timber Permit Program. For an individual to become a Community Timber Permit Program Member there must be an available vacancy that the Forestry department has justification to fill. The program vacancy will only be filled if there is available timber volume within the permit program. While this membership provides access to potential community timber permits, there are no tenure rights associated with community timber permit program membership. Commercial timber permits authorize the permit holder to harvest timber on specified Crown land subject to the permit's terms and conditions (such as obtaining an approval for an annual operating plan before any forest operations). Commercial timber permits are generally sold through a competitive bidding process and can be sold to any eligible person or corporation. They can also be sold by tender, by auction or by direct sale.
