Description

The prehistory of Alberta Plains span at least 11,000 years. Archaeologists have discerned changes in artifact styles which allow this long record of human habitation to be divided into periods and phases/complexes. The periods document changes in weapon technology while the phases/complexes reflect style changes through time. Archaeologists have interpreted these changes in various ways, which are explored in this manuscript.

Description

This document constitutes the final report of archaeological activities during the 1983 field season by staff of Alberta Culture at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. The site has been identified by the provincial government or the development of an on-site public interpretive program. One of the primary purposes was to conduct archaeological studies of the site areas where development would cause surface disturbance, such as parking lots, access roads, the building site and smaller related facilities. A second purpose in initiating a multi-year archaeological project at the site was to begin acquiring information about the site which is not available from previous studies and which is necessary to the interpretive program planned for the site.

Description

The Eaglenest Portage Site (alternately referred to by the briefer Borden designation, HkPa 4), is a large site located in the Birch Mountains region of northeastern Alberta. Extensive excavations aimed at obtaining a glimpse of the spatial structure of artifact distributions on the site were carried out during the summer of 1976. An assemblage dominated by simple flake tools and debitage was recovered. The site has been occupied over the last two millenia and comparisons have been made with assemblages from the areas North and East of the Birch Mountains.

Archaeological studies at this site were initiated in response to the planned construction of a residential subdivision in northwest Calgary. The results of the excavation demonstrated a significant interpretive potential associated with the depressional features on Nose Hill. Gaps in the archaeological record, as expressed in the Hawkwood site (primarily of the Tuxana Tradition), are known to be present elsewhere on the uplands north of Calgary and represent a significant asset to future generations of archaeologists.

Description

In 1977 and 1978 archaeological excavations were carried out at Victoria Post in areas not previously examined, to further broaden our understanding of this late-nineteenth-century fur trade site. Much new information was recovered on the structure of the Clerk's house and associated kitchen extensions and refuse features. Two newly located refuse deposits associated with the Men's house residential area were also excavated. Comparisons and contrasts have been drawn in the cultural assemblages associated with each of the two residential areas, incorporating earlier excavation results from near the Men's house. This was done in an attempt to recognize similarities and differences in the archaeological record which could be attributed to the lifestyles of the Hudson's Bay Company employees. Cultural material patterns were observed and have been interpreted as contributing important information on the personnel, life and activities at the post.

This monograph delimits the results of the 1978 excavations at FjPi-29 in the Strathcona Science Park near Edmonton, Alberta. Artifacts resulting from controlled surface pickup, patterned auger hole testing and the excavation of ten 2x2 metre units are examined in depth with detailed comparison to other similar sites and interpretations of "intra-site patterning" of lithic remains. A problem-orientated approach, as outlined in the introduction, is summarized in the concluding section, along with some preliminery hypotheses for testing during the continuance of the programme during the 1979 field season.

Description

This thesis investigates prehistoric cultures of the Northern Great Plains during the period from 1000 BC to 1000 AD, viewing them within a taxonomic framework of archaeological units—the phase and cultural tradition. In this thesis 200 archaeological components and 155 radiocarbon dates are utilized to develop 11 phases, eight subphases, and six cultural traditions. The phases and subphases are described in terms of their artifact, settlement, subsistence, and burial systems. The relationship of these various phases and cultural traditions are examined to determine if they represent either indigenous populations who became acculturated to new cultural patterns or intrusive populations into the northern half of the Great Plains.
