Description

This annual report of the Ministry of Culture contains the minister's accountability statement, the audited consolidated financial statements of the ministry and a comparison of actual performance results to desired results set out in the ministry business plan. This ministry annual report also includes: the financial statements of entities making up the ministry including the Department of Culture, regulated funds and provincial agencies for which the minister is responsible; and other financial information as required by the Financial Administration Act and Fiscal Management Act, either as separate reports or as a part of the financial statements, to the extent that the ministry has anything to report.

Description

The Turner Valley gas plant site, used for many decades for petroleum production and refining, was decommissioned after 1985 and was designated as a historic site in 1995. A reclamation program was implemented for the redevelopment of the site. As part of the reclamation program, a groundwater containment and treatment system was constructed to contain and treat impacted groundwater. The objectives of the 2010 monitoring and sampling programs were to evaluate the groundwater quality at selected areas of the historical gas plant and the performance of the containment wall and treatment corridor.

Starting in December 2009, the Minister of Alberta Culture and Community Spirit hosted a series of meetings in six communities across the province with the arts sector, to identify challenges and opportunities where the government and the arts sector could work together to support healthy and vibrant communities. In the Fall of 2010, the Minister returned to each of the six communities he visited previously, as well as two new communities. This report is a summary of what was heard and the solutions both Alberta Culture and Community Spirit and the sector are currently engaged in. Also included are new actions Alberta Culture and Community Spirit is undertaking as a result of the dialogues. The report is arranged based upon the key themes that emerged.

Between December 2009 and February 2010, the Minister of Alberta Culture and Community Spirit hosted a series of meetings with the nonprofit/ voluntary sector, to collectively develop solutions that would help ensure the long-term growth and success of the sector and support healthy and vibrant communities. In the Fall of 2010, the Minister returned to each of the six communities he visited previously, as well as two new communities. This report is a summary of what was heard throughout the dialogues and what solutions are being implemented by both Alberta Culture and Community Spirit and the sector. Also included are new actions Alberta Culture and Community Spirit will be undertaking as a result of the dialogues. This report is arranged based upon the key themes that emerged. Whenever possible, the locations where the feedback originated have been included.

Description

The Turner Valley gas plant site, used for many decades for petroleum production and refining, was decommissioned after 1985 and was designated as a historic site in 1995. A reclamation program was implemented for the redevelopment of the site. As part of the reclamation program, a groundwater containment and treatment system was constructed to contain and treat impacted groundwater. The purpose of the 2009 groundwater monitoring program was to collect groundwater data in order to assess the performance of the remediation system.

The Turner Valley gas plant site, used for many decades for petroleum production and refining, was decommissioned after 1985 and was designated as a historic site in 1995. The conservation planning presented in this report has been developed to mesh conservation priorities determined in the assessment of the buildings and equipment, together with the interpretive strategy. The plan establishes two distinct components for the site: a self-guided component, and a guided walking tour.

In February of 2009, Alberta Culture and Community Spirit undertook a strategic overview of cultural facilities across the province in order to ascertain the state of activity in cultural facilities planning, and to identify current trends and projects in development. To supplement this work, the Honourable Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit, hosted a series of regional dialogues in June 2009 aimed at gathering information, understanding diverse perspectives and identifying community needs related to cultural infrastructure. Results from the dialogues will assist the department in developing a comprehensive plan for maintaining existing inventory in the province, while deploying resources for new facilities in a visionary and innovative fashion. A total of 162 individuals attended six dialogues, held in various regions of the province.
