Presents findings of an investigation of a workplace fatality that occurred in the provincial and municipal government, education and health services sector in June 2017. A worker was was performing maintenance on a ride-on lawnmower and had it elevated utilizing a jack. The lawnmower fell and crushed the worker.

The report is part of the Benefits to Post-Secondary Education Project, led by Alberta Advanced Education in partnership with Statistics Canada, that is intended to fill information gaps related to the labour market outcomes of Alberta’s post-secondary graduates.

The educational classifications are '0-8 years', ‘some high school’, 'high school graduate', ‘some post-secondary’, 'post-secondary certificate or diploma', ‘bachelor’s degree’ and 'above bachelor’s degree'. Generally, persons with higher educational qualifications have higher employment rates than those with lower qualifications.

In 2006, the Government of Alberta released Building and Educating Tomorrow’s Workforce (BETW). The strategy outlines 17 actions to address labour force development through four themes: Inform, Attract, Develop and Retain. Under BETW, each ministry identifies specific labour force actions and initiatives, with funding allocated through ministry budgets based on provincial priorities. These funds are used strategically to build on and improve provincial initiatives such as those for apprenticeship and community employment. Other funding permits the creation of new programs and initiatives, such as virtual job fairs, collaborations with industry that increase the number of people with trade skills and labour market forecasting publications.

Progress update reports are not an inventory of all industry activities but are intended to showcase projects of interest to other sectors. Learning from other sectors’ practices provides an opportunity for collaboration and helps prevent duplication of activities. In recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs) participating in Alberta's labour market. This is a trend largely related to the strong performance of Alberta's economy. Until 2006, less than one per cent of the province's total labour force was TFWs. However, with the federal changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program in 2007 and Alberta's growing economy at the time, the province saw a significant spike in the number of TFWs in the province to a high of almost 58,000 in 2008. In 2010, Teresa Woo-Paw, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Employment and Immigration, was mandated to carry out a series of public consultations to identify where the TFW Program fits in Alberta's labour force planning, what role TFWs fill in Alberta's labour market and how to ensure the program is best serving the needs of Albertans. This document focuses on hazards and controls in Central Processing (CPD), sometimes called by other names including Central Supply or Central Sterile Supply (CSD, CSSD or CSR). Central Processing workers may be exposed to a variety of workplace hazards in the course of performing their functions. The type and degree of exposure is dependent upon the type of Central Processing and its location (e.g., in communities and retail establishments, in hospitals, etc.). A key component of a health and safety program is to identify and assess hazards and determine appropriate controls.
