Description

The Geological Atlas of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin was designed primarily as a reference volume documenting the subsurface geology of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. This GIS dataset is one of a collection of shapefiles representing part of Chapter 9 of the Atlas, Middle Ordovician to Lower Devonian Strata of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, Figure 22, Ordovician-Silurian Subcrop/Outcrop Williston Basin. Shapefiles were produced from archived digital files created by the Alberta Geological Survey in the mid-1990s, and edited in 2005-06 to correct, attribute and consolidate the data into single files by feature type and by figure.

Description

The dataset contains the results of analyses of surface water samples collected by AGS in the summer of 1999. Three lakes, three creeks, one stream and two rivers were sampled as part of a water sampling program carried out by AGS in the Athabasca Oil Sands in-situ area of Alberta. This area extends from approximately 55.34 degrees north latitude to 55.96 degrees north latitude, and 110.5 degrees west longitude to 111.8 degrees west longitude. The datum is NAD83. The dataset contains information on laboratory measured pH and conductivity, major, minor and trace element concentrations, as well as stable isotope ratio values of oxygen and hydrogen. AGS staff collected the samples using a discrete sampling method. The sample bottle was dipped into the surface water body and partially filled with water, rinsed and the water was discarded. The Cold Lake oil sands area, Township 56 to 69, Range 1 to 11, west of the 4th Meridian, falls within the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan (LARP). As part of Alberta's Land-use Framework, LARP was developed in 2012 to set the stage for robust growth, vibrant communities and a healthy environment within the region. One of its implementation objectives is to balance the economic development of oil sands and impacts on ecosystem and environment. This is to be achieved through enhanced science-based monitoring for improved characterization of the environment and collection of the information necessary to understand cumulative effects. For this digital data release, a land use and land cover classification dataset was derived from 2005 Landsat multispectral imagery for the Cold Lake Oil Sands area.
