Incorporates and merges information from existing wetland classification systems to provide a holistic classification system for Alberta. The guide is tailored specifically for wetlands in Alberta, providing suites of key indicators that in conjunction will help to classify different wetlands, particularly in the field. Overall, the intent of the guide is to achieve a standardized provincial wetland classification system.

Description

The Ecosystem Services approach pilot on wetlands is part of the Alberta Environment and Water’s 10-year ecosystem services road map. Its completion and results are considered a progression in understanding and applying an ecosystem services approach to support decision making. Ecosystems provide innumerable services that are underrepresented or absent in most economic development decisions; however, these services contribute to development objectives (e.g., scenic quality of the land) and to realizing quality of life goals. Identifying and understanding many of the services from wetlands can provide more information to decision makers, which may help to prevent unintended consequences from development decisions.

Description

The purpose of this report is to provide those interested in using an ecosystem services approach and other interested readers with an understanding of the approach taken and limitations identified in the approach itself, as well as the results. Based upon advice and experience of international experts it is understood that the work to assess ecosystem services within a strong policy context, and using knowledge from multiple disciplines, is leading edge, and attempts were made to ensure the pilot and results presented are credible, legitimate and policy relevant.

This report summarizes the socio-cultural studies completed during the Ecosystem Services Approach Pilot on Wetlands, which was part of Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development's 10-year ES Roadmap. The report describes the steps and results of three socio-cultural work tasks which explore different aspects of how people assign value, otherwise referred to as importance, to different features of wetlands and the services and benefits they provide. Additionally, a description is provided on how the categories of socio-cultural services were identified.

The Ecosystem Services Approach Pilot on Wetlands is part of the Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development's 10-year ES Roadmap; its completion and results are considered a progression in understanding and applying an ES Approach to support decision making. This technical report was prepared for the ES Pilot team members, technical professionals, and other target groups/individuals with interests in economic valuation. The report documents the approaches undertaken to conduct economic valuations and deliver major deliverables and to discuss the links of economic valuation to wetland decision making. Limitations, caveats and next steps are also discussed.

Description

Geographic Information Systems technologies were used to model water storage and flood control functions as well as related beneficiaries and ecosystem services of wetlands in the Shepard Slough study area east of Calgary. The water storage model used a raster-based computer script using LiDAR inputs combined with a rating curve to estimate water storage capacity volumes for each wetland in the study area. The flood control model used eight separate predictor variables of wetland flood control functions.

This assessment was conducted for Alberta Environment by the Biophysical Team for the Wetland Ecosystem Services Pilot project in the Shepard Slough area east of Calgary, to determine the potential applicability of WESPUS in the context of Alberta's biophysical and regulatory landscapes.

The study was part of the Ecosystem Services pilot, which in turn is part of the longer term Ecosystem Services Roadmap intended as a tool under the Cumulative Effects Management Framework to help inform trade-off decisions and assure more robust decision-making.
