Report on the progress of the Watershed Resiliency and Restoration Program since its inception in 2014. The program aims to build long-term watershed resiliency to flood and drought by improving natural watershed functions and engaging Albertans in the conservation, restoration, enhancement and stewardship of critical watershed features including wetlands, riparian areas and floodplains.

Description

ESRD has established the WRRP to promote the long-term ability of watersheds to mitigate the effects of future flood and drought events. The primary objective of the program is to increase the natural ability of the province's watersheds to reduce the intensity, magnitude, duration and effects of flooding and drought through watershed mitigation measures. Additionally, the program aims to address impacts of past flooding and/or droughts through the restoration of degraded priority areas of watersheds which will enhance communities' ability to withstand future flooding or droughts.

Collaboration with stakeholders and the general public will be key during the process. Given that there is not yet an established watershed group representing the entire Battle River watershed, Alberta Environment will assemble a stakeholder group with a view to it becoming a Watershed Planning and Advisory Council as identified in the Water for Life Strategy, for future phases of planning.
