Description

This document outlines policies and procedures followed by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas in dealing with some situations related to regulated drinking water and wastewater systems that are not covered by the regulations. The information is used by EPA staff when assessing applications related to EPEA approvals or authorizations of municipal drinking water and wastewater systems. This includes procedures for protecting water bodies, calculating effluent limit for discharge too water bodies and land, considering alternative treatment technology and for options for improving quality of stormwater. The manual has been revised to stream processes for considering new technology and to remove outdated material on the protocol for responding to failed bacterial tests in drinking water systems.

The severe province-wide drought in the early 2000’s reaffirmed the importance and value of water to rural people across the Canadian prairies. Dry wells and dugouts, crop failures and dust storms were all commonplace. Individually, these measures may not provide the level of drought protection needed, but when combined, they can provide a high degree of drought preparedness and security. A good understanding of your water requirements and water source options is a key first step. This fact sheet provides information about drought security related to your water source. Other forms of risk management, such as crop insurance, community networks or reducing livestock herds, are discussed in other Agriculture and Forestry publications.

This plan is the Approved Water Management Plan for the Battle River Basin (Alberta) and provides direction for the management of surface water and groundwater that has hydrologic connection to surface water within the Battle River Basin. The recommended options and strategies presented in this plan were developed through a Stakeholder Advisory Group, and are designed to strike a balance between a healthy aquatic ecosystem, a vibrant economy, and sustainable communities. Primary emphasis is placed on the need to live within the carrying capacity of the watershed, and the need to improve the health of the aquatic ecosystem.

Purified water passes through the membrane and collects in a storage container. Small household reverse osmosis systems will produce 1 to 5 gallons of water per day. If total dissolved solids is greater than 2,000 ppm, or more than 5 gallons of water per day is required, a booster pump will be required.
