In 2014 Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development released Alberta's Irrigation: A Strategy For The Future. The document included five key strategies which together laid out the department's blueprint for the future of the irrigation industry in Alberta. In an effort to manage and measure each of these strategies, an annual measurement and reporting of results was implemented.

Alberta's 13 irrigation districts contain more than 55 reservoirs and approximately 8,000 km of conveyance works, including canals and pipelines. Good quality irrigation water is needed for all uses of the water: agricultural production, municipal water supply, wildlife habitat, and numerous recreational activities such as fishing, camping, and golfing. A five-year study (2011 to 2015) was conducted to assess the quality of irrigation water in these districts. This report summarizes activities and findings of the 2014 sampling season.
