Description

The term "rangeland health" is used to mean the ability of rangeland to perform certain key functions. The term health conveys the meaning that all parts that make up the whole, are present and working together. Recently, within the range scientific community, there has been a move to define rangeland health on a broader list of functions. For rangelands, the functions of healthy range include: * Net primary production. * Maintenance of soil/site stability. * Capture and beneficial release of water. * Nutrient and energy cycling. * Functional diversity of plant species.

This report describes results from measurements of 15 year height and diameter at breast height made on a series of provenance trials comprised of 23 Alberta populations planted on 0 test sites across the province. Although currently the age of these trials ranges from 19 to 24, only 15 year data for height and diameter are available for all trials.

The Alberta Forest Legacy document guided the original development of the standards. These standards were developed to allow for the possibility that all forests originating from Stream 2 material will be replaced through natural regeneration rather than planting. These standards will be adapted to evolving knowledge. The standards were implemented in 2003, reviewed in 2004 and 2005 and revised in July, 2005. They were reviewed again in 2008 and 2009 with a revision in May of 2009. A future review is planned for 2013.

Rangelands are complex and diverse, but with practical field training, it is possible to consistently evaluate the condition or health of a range site. Traditional range condition assessment sometimes seems complex and cumbersome. This new methodology provides a visual system that allows users to readily see changes in range health and to provide some early warning when management changes are needed. Like the system of riparian health assessment developed by the Cows and Fish Program in Alberta, range health assessment is intended to help users "tune" their eyes to some key indicators of range health.

This report collates and synthesizes much of the current information and scientific literature on the impacts of climate change on forests and forest ecosystems, with special relevance to the province of Alberta. Forest ecosystems are highly dependent upon climate for distribution of tree species, their growth, productivity and health, and are predicted to respond in a variety of ways to a changing climate. This report presents an overview of the major impacts predicted to occur during the 21st century. Based upon climate change projections for Alberta, significant impacts reviewed are in relation to tree species distributions, changes in forest ecosystems and biodiversity, wetland areas, growth and productivity responses of trees, disturbance events, forest genetics, invasive species, and with an emphasis on forest health-related issues.
