Description

The maps in this information product illustrate the location of Alberta's 87 provincial electoral divisions. Electoral boundaries are defined by the Alberta Election Act, Chapter E-1, 2018. Provincial electoral divisions are territorial units represented by an elected Member to serve in the Alberta Provincial Legislative Assembly. The provincial electoral divisions included in this information product were enacted in December 2017 and will come into effect for the 2019 provincial general election.

These profiles provide detailed demographic and socio-economic information for Alberta's 87 provincial electoral divisions for the 2019 provincial general election. Data have been specifically tabulated from the 2016 Census of Canada. Provincial electoral divisions are territorial units represented by an elected Member to serve in the Alberta provincial legislative assembly. The provincial electoral divisions used in these information products were enacted in December 2017 and came into effect for the 2019 provincial general election.

Description

Heightened nutrient levels along the Bow River downstream of Calgary have long been a concern. In the 1970s and 1980s, high nutrient levels resulted in excessive aquatic plant growth resulting in low dissolved oxygen and the occasional fish kill. In the past, the high nutrient levels were primarily managed by placing concentration limits on point source discharges. The decision (in 2005) to discharge treated wastewater from Strathmore to the Bow River was a turning point. The environmental approval for the activity was successfully appealed to the Environmental Appeals Board (2007), who in their ruling emphasized that such decisions ought to be managed in light of their cumulative environmental impacts, particularly given that water quality guidelines were being exceeded.

Eight scenarios were run with the Bow River Water Quality Model (BRWQM) to support the Bow River Phosphorus Management Plan (PMP). The scenarios predicted close to 10% increase in the instream Total Phosphorus (TP) concentration above Highwood River using the loading projected by 2039. The Dissolved Oxygen (DO) was above the chronic guideline of 6.5 mg/L in all the scenarios; however, in some instances the DO was below 8.3 mg/L in May and June. The acute guideline showed two critical locations: 10 km downstream from Bonnybrook and 10 km downstream from Strathmore wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). The frequency of compliance was at or below 99.91% in these two locations for the scenarios that used the forecasted TP loading by 2039.

Previously there were three weed categories, restricted weeds, noxious weeds and nuisance weeds. These categories were replaced with the new weed designations of Prohibited Noxious and Noxious.
