Description

This resource was developed to assist agencies and professionals needing to manage risks related to property or materials contaminated with fentanyl. Procedures for the assessment and remediation of property or materials contaminated with fentanyl are outlined. These will be most applicable in situations where contamination with fentanyl is known or determined to have occurred. Typically, the need for assessment and remediation will be triggered by law enforcement or another regulatory agency.

This functional planning study considered requirements for the upgrading and twinning of a section of Highway 3 from the Town of Taber to west of the Hamlet of Burdett. The purpose of this study is to identify staged options to upgrade the highway to a twinned freeway corridor and identify future interchange locations. Highway 3 is part of Canada’s National Highway System (NHS), moving people, goods and services interprovincially and internationally. The corridor provides a primary connection between southern Alberta to provinces east and west and is one of only three continuous east-west routes through Alberta.

Description

In 2014, Stantec Consulting Ltd. carried out an in depth survey of the Highwood River valley for archaeological, historic, and palaeontological resources. In addition to revisiting known sites and recording new ones, the project provided risk assessments relative to flood related impacts and site management strategies. New sites were recorded all along the Highwood River and several known sites were found to be much richer than previously thought. Additionally, numerous new Quaternary microfaunal, macrofaunal, and palaeoenvironmental sites were recorded during the palaeontological survey. This paper presents a brief summary of the program, including a case study of a joint archaeological and palaeontological locality. Part of the 37th volume of the Archaeological Survey of Alberta Occasional Paper series, which contains 18 articles exploring multiple facets of the impact on archaeological resources of the 2013 flood in southern Alberta.

Technical report prepared for the Community Flood Mitigation Advisory Panel and describing proposed flood mitigation measures for the Elbow River, Sheep River and Highwood River basins. The report presents the design basis, conceptual details and opinions of probable costs for the proposed flood mitigation measures. Following the flooding in southern Alberta in June of 2013, The Community Flood Mitigation Advisory Panel was established in July 2013 to advise the government of Alberta on possible flood mitigation measures that may be implemented to reduce future flood damages.

Two TransAlta Utilities Corporation power generating plants are located on the shores of Wabamun Lake. The plants use a local supply of coal which is strip mined within the watershed. The Wabamun Power Plant is located on the north shore near the village of Wabamun and the Sundance Power Plant on the opposite south shore. There are three major point source discharges to Wabamun Lake through canals including a thermal discharge and mine drainage discharge from the Wabamun Plant on the north shore and a water discharge from the Wabamun Lake Water Treatment Plant on the south shore. Of the three major point source discharges to Wabamun Lake, the influence of the thermal effluent on aquatic vegetation and invertebrate fauna has been documented, however, the effects from the two other sources on local invertebrate fauna have not been documented.
