Description

The Alfalfa Seed Plan Regulation, under the Marketing of Agricultural Products Act continues the Alfalfa Seed Commission, defines the regulated product, sets the purpose, administration, and financing of the Plan, and outlines the governance framework and election processes for the board of directors. The Regulation also states to whom the Plan applies (persons who produce or market the regulated product in Alberta, except those in the Peace Region of Alberta).

Description

The Alberta Crop Report provides timely provincial and regional summaries of crop production in Alberta during the crop season, and is used by industry and other stakeholders for various purposes, including drought monitoring and forecasting of production insurance payments. The report is also used to validate some of the Alberta crop estimates generated by Statistics Canada. Data for the report is collected through regular surveys on moisture and crop conditions, progress of seeding and harvesting, insect and disease situation, yield potential and crop quality, etc., along with information from other sources. Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation (AGI) has delivered the Alberta Crop Reporting Program to clients since 1940.

The Land Suitability Rating System (LSRS) rating map illustrates the relative suitability of lands in Alberta for growing spring-seeded small grains and shows how the dominant LSRS codes are distributed across Alberta. The LSRS rating process improves on the more subjective and dated Canada Land Inventory rating process. The map combines the AGRASID 4.1 computed LSRS values of the agricultural area of the province with the SLC 3.2 computed LSRS values of the forested area of the province. It outlines the appointment and powers of inspectors who enforce the Act and the operational requirements of seed cleaning facilities. Offences related to, and penalties for, contravention of the Act are described.
