Description

A greater sage-grouse avian predator monitoring survey was needed to provide information on distribution, habitat associations, and baseline populations prior to initiation of a sage-grouse predator management program. The survey is designed for repeating in subsequent years once predator management is underway, thereby providing a potential measure of program effectiveness. This report describes the avian predator monitoring protocol and results of the 2013 survey. The survey area is within the current Alberta sage-grouse range, an area of ~3800 km in in the extreme south-eastern corner of the province. The monitoring protocol was designed for collection of data on avian predators, particularly corvids (American crows, black-billed magpies, common ravens). A systematic roadside survey was designed using a series of point samples contributing to a continuous observation zone along a series of 19 road-based transects, each of 10 kilometers length.

Description

The MULTISAR Program was initiated in the Milk River Basin in 2002 to assist landholders in the management of species at risk on their land. After its inception in 2002, MULTISAR expanded in 2005 to include the Pakowki Basin and portions of the St. Mary's Basin into its core program area in response to landowner interest. Conservation programs are now initiated on roughly 180,000 acres of lands and public interest continues to grow within and outside the program area. This resource reports on the activities and achievements of the program for 2006-2007.

Description

Prior to the late 1970s, the northern leopard frog was a common and widely distributed amphibian throughout central and southern Alberta. Unfortunately, the northern leopard frog has vanished from much of its former range in the province and due to the continued declining populations it was designated as threatened under Alberta's Wildlife Act in 1996. Because the small number of remaining populations of leopard frogs are patchy and separated by large areas of unsuitable habitat, their re-establishment into previously occupied habitat may rely on transplanting individuals or egg masses from existing major breeding populations in southern Alberta. This report looks at the results of a reintroduction project which was initiated in Magrath in spring 2003.

MULTISAR: The Milk River Basin Project is an innovative approach to multi-species management in southern Alberta. The Milk River Basin was chosen as Alberta's first multi-species landscape management initiative based on on the high number of sensitive, at risk, and may be at risk species combined with the small area that the basin encompasses. The project outlines a process to provide appropriate management on critical parts of the landscape to achieve multi-species conservation. It also emphasizes voluntary stewardship activities, and cooperation between conservation groups and private landowners to achieve conservation of multiple species.

The western blue flat conservation program, managed by the Alberta Conservation Association, was established to deliver the monitoring and stewardship activities identified in the Action plan. In 2003, two new landowners joined the program for a total of eight participants. In 2002, a monitoring protocol for the conservation program was initiated. This includes a landowner questionnaire, tracking of on-the-ground management on cooperating ranches, and monitoring the response of western blue flag over time.
