Description

Natural ecological communities are defined as recurring assemblages of plant species; the species occurring together because they respond similarly to a variety of site attributes (Grossman et al 1994). The species that make up the assemblage often show an affinity or association with each other (Kent and Coker 1992). To develop an initial tracking list of natural ecological community elements, publications describing vegetation in Alberta were reviewed and discussions were held with knowledgeable individuals. Community types that have been described as 'unusual', 'uncommon', 'of limited extent' or 'encountered infrequently' by vegetation experts were considered for inclusion on the Ecological Community Tracking List. Community types that have been described as 'in decline' or 'threatened' by vegetation experts were also considered for inclusion. Only natural communities were considered. Description

The 2000 edition of the General Status of Alberta Wild Species represents a substantial improvement in the knowledge base of wild species in Alberta. Preliminary status assessments were prepared for 4 735 species of birds, mammals, herpetiles (amphibians and reptiles), freshwater fish, molluscs (gastropods and bivalves), odonates (dragonflies and damselflies), lepidopterans (butterflies and skippers), vascular plants, nonvascular plants and fungi in Alberta. Of these groups, Alberta, along with all other provinces and territories, agreed to report on eight to Environment Canada so that a national evaluation could be undertaken (see Background of the Present General Status Evaluation Exercise). These groups included the birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater fish, butterflies, orchids and ferns. The status of species in these categories is provided here.

Sandhill habitats contain a major concentration of significant features, including numerous rare, threatened and endangered species of plants and animals. Based on recommendations from previous studies on reptiles and amphibians and rare plants in Alberta's grasslands and parkland natural regions, a broad study on sandhill habitats was undertaken in 1987. The study area encompassed all sand plains and sandhill habitats from the Red Deer River south to the United States boundary, west to highway 2 and east to the Saskatchewan border. In addition, several sites north of the Red Deer River north to the David Lake area were investigated. Research in 1987 was undertaken on rare, threatened and endangered wildlife and plants. Rare, threatened and endangered plants were studied to map their distributions, and to assess the degree to which dune stabilization was occurring and how this affected native plants.
