Flood studies include detailed engineering reports and flood maps. The engineering reports are typically technical in nature and document the data, assumptions, and results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analyses required to create flood maps. Flood maps are created by combining hydraulic model results for different sized floods with high-accuracy ground information. Flood maps identify where water will flow during a flood, and what land could be flooded during different sized floods. Most flood maps focus on floods caused by high river flows when water escapes the river channel, most often experienced in spring or following summer rainstorms, but they can also show areas at risk from ice jam floods or document the extent of historic floods.Flood inundation maps show areas at risk for different sized floods, including ice jam floods in some communities, and identify areas protected by flood berms. Critical habitat is identified for species listed as Endangered or Threatened under the federal Species at Risk Act (SARA) and where federal critical habitat protection orders are in effect. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is the responsible authority for the protection, recovery and conservation of all listed aquatic species at risk in Canada. Critical habitat is defined as the habitat that is necessary for the survival or recovery of a listed wildlife species and that is identified as such in the recovery strategy or action plan for the species (https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/species-risk-public-registry.html). SARA makes it illegal to destroy any part of the critical habitat of a listed species and may impose restrictions on development and construction. Sub-regional plans support working landscapes that provide economic opportunities and maintain healthy landscapes by outlining management approaches and requirements for development and human footprint restoration. These plans enable public lands to support the interests of all Albertans, including Indigenous peoples, for the present and into the future. The Cold Lake Sub-Regional Plan Spatial Data dataset contains spatial data that can be used for planning as described within the Cold Lake Sub-regional Plan (2022). The following datasets are available: Cold Lake Watercourse/Waterbody Setbacks, and Cold Lake Recreational Management Areas.

Description

This 5 class 6 m resolution land cover was created for the NSWA and BRWA in 2020-2021 using SPOT6/7 imagery from 2017 and 2018 provided by the Government of Alberta in order to assess riparian intactness for 25,272 km of shoreline in Alberta. The land cover was developed from 44 separate supervised random forest classifications of 41 different SPOT6 6m imagery tiles from 2017/2018 and was then clipped to a 50 m buffer around waterbodies of interest. The full classification is composed of 41 individual polygon files, each of which corresponds to the original SPOT tile that the classification was performed on. Details on the individual SPOT tiles is available in the accompanying report. Two data products are available from this project: Wall to Wall Land Cover (available in TIFF and FGDB formats) and Shoreline Buffer (available in TIFF format). Please see the Distribution Information to obtain the data products.

Description

This dataset shows length weighted connectivity values summarized by hydrologic unit code (HUC) for a provincial stream connectivity indicator that assesses connectivity for aquatic organisms in stream networks. The stream connectivity indicator supports evaluation and reporting on indicator condition over time and provides information to support management of watercourse crossings. The stream connectivity indicator produces an estimate of the average connectivity in a stream network, considering the movement requirements of local species and the locations of watercourse crossings. The indicator is calculated and summarized using hydrologic unit codes (HUCs). Indicator values are calculated at a HUC 6 scale, and summarized for HUC 8 watersheds at four timesteps: 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018.

The Watershed Planning and Advisory Councils (WPAC) boundaries contained in this dataset are an approximate representation of the WPAC planning areas in Alberta. The actual boundary used by individual WPACs may differ from what is contained in this data.These boundaries were derived from the Drainage Basins of Alberta and contain all currently designated WPACs and one yet to be established for the combined Peace and Slave River basins. This data is available to Government of Alberta staff via Layer Manager. For other access to the data, please contact the distributor.

Description

The data represents the relative expense of farm chemicals (herbicides, insecticides and fungicides) in the agricultural area of Alberta. It is an estimate of the degree to which crop production agriculture may contribute to surface or groundwater contamination.Agriculture production that makes greater use of herbicides, insecticides and pesticides in generally considered more intensive. Presenting the relative farm chemical expenses by SLC polygons reveals where the most intensive agricultural production in the province occurs. Chemical use is part of an equation to determine a measure of surface water quality risk. If an area is known to have certain risk factors that would affect not only surface, but groundwater quality as well, a higher chemical expense index ranking in that same area may be of concern. Where risks of surface or groundwater contamination exist, environmental farm planning can help to minimize them.

The Grassland Vegetation Inventory (GVI) represents the Government of Alberta's comprehensive biophysical, anthropogenic and land-use inventory of the southernmost portion of the province's White Area. Species distributions are also described and displayed in Recovery Strategies, Action Plans and/or Management Plans. Discrepancies may exist between the distribution data shown in a species SARA recovery document and the current spatial data. Please contact DFO for more information on any data discrepancies. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata for the appropriate contact to acquire this dataset. Riparian areas consist of the lands adjacent to streams, rivers, wetlands and lakes that are strongly influenced by the presence of water. They are often distinct from the surrounding landscape as the vegetation growth is very lush. These areas form a transition between dry land and open water and are characterized by the presence of hydrophilic vegetation and specific soil types. Riparian areas are usually very productive in terms of biomass and form critical wildlife habitat. Additionally, these areas often have standing water and are subjected to periodic flooding when high water levels fill the stream channel to the top of the bank. The term 'riparian' is derived from the Latin word for river bank. Riparian areas provide valuable food, shelter and travel corridors as well...
