Description

The Bow River Access Plan supports the broader provincial outcomes of providing Albertans more access to nature, recreation and tourism opportunities identified in Alberta’s Plan for Parks (2009) and Alberta’s Tourism Framework (2013). This document presents a number of common issues were raised during the engagement sessions and through the online surveys and provides government responses to these.

The Bighorn Advisory Group was asked to provide recommendations about recreational access into the Bighorn area, which includes prime protection zone, critical wildlife zone and multiple use zone within the Eastern Slopes planning framework. The Advisory Group made the following recommendation to the Alberta government: An access Management Plan Shall be prepared for the Bighorn Backcountry, excluding only the Job Lake and Panther Corners forest land use zones. . . The plan provides a statement of management intent for the planning area and direction for locating development and pursuing activities. The plan is non-statutory.

Development of a management plan for Christina Lake was initiated in 1988, in response to a perceived increase in the variety and amount of resource use and development pressures on the lake and its shorelands. A biophysical inventory and land use evaluation of the Christina Lake shoreland area was completed in the fall of 1988. The Plan endeavours to allow for increased recreational use and limited industrial development of the area so tha tthe major values of the lake and backshore remain unimpaired for wildland recreational opportunities into the future.

The economic planning and resource development committee of Cabinet approved the Big Bend Sub-regional Integrated Resource Plan on June 19, 1985. This plan identified resource potential and development opportunities within specific resource management areas. The North Athabasca Resource Management Area, in the northern end of the Big Bend planning area, was designated "to provide localised nodal recreational developments catering to a variety of water-oriented uses at Fawcett Lake".
