Workplace incident fatalities are cases where a worker dies at a work site or as a result of injuries sustained at a work site. The numbers presented in this report reflect the workplace incidents accepted by the Workers’ Compensation Board – Alberta.

Description

Presents the findings of an investigation into a workplace fatality in the manufacturing and processing sector that occurred in August, 2014. Workers were troubleshooting a clogged pipe and added water to the feeder line and heated it with steam in order to break down the materials blocking the pipe. During the draining phase, a relief cap on the feeder line was removed or dislodged causing steam heated water to contact the worker. The worker suffered severe burns to 80 percent of his body and died 41 days later in hospital. A worker was servicing his personal vehicle at his employer’s service shop. While under the vehicle, the worker was using a pry bar to move the front end back and forth and the stand supporting the truck frame on the driver side toppled. Presents the findings of an investigation into a workplace fatality in the construction and construction trades sector that occurred in Calgary in November, 2014. Workers on a road-building project were in the process of installing a liner into a sewer line. Workers attempted to open a pneumatic clamp mechanism that had been secured with a ratchet strap. Another labourer entered the mechanism of the installation unit, and just as he entered the ratchet strap released, resulting in the labourer being struck in the head by the clamp mechanism.
