This guide summarizes the requirements for agencies delivering first aid training courses in accordance with Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, Regulation and Code. It outlines the Quality Management Plan (QMP) requirements that agencies must have in place to assure consistent delivery of high quality first aid courses for designated workplace first aiders in Alberta. It also includes the required minimum workplace first aid training standards for Alberta.

Alberta Human Services supports using environmentally friendly products, as long as employers ensure that the health and safety of workers using the products is protected. Alberta has adopted an occupational exposure limit (OEL) of 50 ppm for HCFC-123 as listed in Table 2, Schedule 1 of the OHS Code. In summary, although the HCFC-123 refrigerant may be more environmentally friendly than CFC-11, it is more toxic and poses a greater potential health risk to people working with and around it. Both HCFC-123 and CFC 11 refrigerants are nonflammable.

In 2010, the Workers’ Compensation Board reported that 2.5 per cent (601 in total) of all lost-time claims and 2.3 per cent (1080 in total) of all disabling injury claims in Alberta were related to eye injuries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each day approximately 2,000 U.S. workers experience a job-related eye injury. One third of these injuries are treated in hospital emergency rooms and more than 100 of these workplace eye injuries result in lost work time. It is widely accepted that most eye injuries can be prevented through the use of effective protective eyewear.
