Environmental assessment registry documents pertaining to the proposed Syncrude Canada Ltd. Mildred Lake Mine Extension (MLX). Proposal consists of two additional mining areas and affiliated perimeter features within and adjacent to the current operating and approved mining areas. The project is designed to sustain bitumen production levels at the Mildred Lake facility after depletion of the current approved mining areas, which is expected in 2024. The estimated mineable resource in the project area is 117 million m3 (738 million barrels) of recoverable bitumen. For more information on the environmental assessment process visit ea.alberta.ca.

Presents the findings of an investigation into a workplace fatality in the mining and petroleum development sector that occurred in December, 2008. A 48-year old male worker, employed as a process technician, was attempting to cut through an ice castle (very large chunk of ice) with a steam line to remove it from the steam tracing supply valves. Description

The adaptability of native cultivated grasses to oil sands disturbances is being studied in a field trial in northestern Alberta. The native grasses originated from the mountains and foothills of the province. The trial was established on blended materials consisting of native sand, clayey overburden and peat. Nine native grasses and eight cultivated grass varieties were seeded in June of 1981. A description of the site, a summary of experimental procedures and first-year results are included in the report.
