Description

In 2006, the Government of Alberta released Building and Educating Tomorrow’s Workforce (BETW). The strategy outlines 17 actions to address labour force development through four themes: Inform, Attract, Develop and Retain. Under BETW, each ministry identifies specific labour force actions and initiatives, with funding allocated through ministry budgets based on provincial priorities. These funds are used strategically to build on and improve provincial initiatives such as those for apprenticeship and community employment. Other funding permits the creation of new programs and initiatives, such as virtual job fairs, collaborations with industry that increase the number of people with trade skills and labour market forecasting publications.

Description

Building and Educating Tomorrow’s Workforce is Alberta’s 10-year labour force development strategy. It was developed by the Government of Alberta, community and industry partners and released in July 2006. In order to monitor its progress, government developed performance indicators and related targets for each outcome. This report provides an update on how well the strategy is working a year after implementation.

The purpose of this document is to provide the rationale for the focus of the government's labour force development strategy and AHRE's action plan. The intent is also to spur discussion amongst stakeholders regarding the direction government is taking in addressing labour force development issues. The document provides a concise overview of labour market issues in Alberta and, where appropriate, places them in a national or global context. It also addresses selected groups in the labour market and discusses the contribution they can make to meet the challenges facing the labour market.
