Paleolimnology is the study of lake development through analysis of physical, chemical and biological information stored in aquatic sediments. Paleolimnology has multiple applications, lake management being one of them. The main objective of this report was to produce a summary of paleolimnological studies completed in Alberta.

Description

The Oldman Reservoir was constructed to assure downstream water supplies for consumption and irrigation, and to provide additional water for future expansion of irrigated land. Additional benefits included enhancement of downstream fisheries, recreation and increased capability to meet flow commitments to the downstream province. The reservoir attenuates peak flows during flood events, although this capability is limited.

Description

The objective of this assessment was to evaluate the downstream water quality implications associated with the use of Cold Lake as a long-term source of raw water for heavy oil extraction plans in the Cold Lake-Beaver River region of Alberta. Cold Lake was one of eight lakes selected as potential water sources in the "local supply" alternative as described in the Cold Lake-Beaver River Water Management Study Main Report. The implications to the water quality of all eight lakes as a result of water withdrawals was dealt within another report.
