Description

Flood maps are created by combining hydraulic model results with high-accuracy ground information. Field surveys and LiDAR remote sensing are used to collect river and floodplain elevations, channel cross section data, bridge and culvert information, and flood berm details. A hydrology assessment using recorded and historic flow measurements is typically used to estimate river flows for a wide range of possible open water floods with different chances of occurring each year. When appropriate, an ice jam frequency analysis is undertaken. All this information is used to build a hydraulic model of a river system, which is calibrated using highwater marks and aerial imagery from past floods to ensure that results for the different flood flows being mapped are reasonable. Flood inundation maps show areas at risk for different sized floods, including ice jam floods in some communities. The dataset includes subsurface stratigraphic picks of the top of the Belly River Group in the Alberta Plains (Townships 1 to 50, Ranges 1W4 to 2W5) made from wireline, geophysical well logs. The dataset supplements Alberta Geological Survey Open File Report 2010-10, which describes the methodology. We screened the well data to detect errors resulting from deviated wells, as well as incorrect ground and kelly bushing elevation data. We used statistical methods to identify local and regional statistical outliers, which were examined individually.

Coal zone boundary for the Lethbridge Coal Zone is based on subcrops generated by Alberta Geological Survey Special Report 007 (Regional Evaluation of the Coalbed Methane Potential in the Plains and Foothills of Alberta, Stratigraphy and Rank Study). We used additional coal picks from various sources to refine the boundary.

Description

This GIS dataset is a compilation of existing surficial map information for the Calgary-Lethbridge Corridor area tiled into one layer. It is suitable for presentation and use at 1:250 000 scale. The dataset was prepared by appending existing GIS datasets into one layer with a standard attribute table. These datasets were then compared against surficial maps for which GIS data were unavailable. Lastly, polygon boundaries were modified to agree with the surface topography as represented by a digital elevation model (DEM) with a grid cell size of 25 metres. Data sources included published Alberta Geological Survey and Geological Survey of Canada maps and the Agricultural Regions of Alberta Soil Inventory Database Version 4.0. Legend information for each polygon was translated by the author into the standard schema.
