Description

This report summarizes traditional knowledge and traditional land use information from the South Saskatchewan and Milk River Basins in southern Alberta. It was prepared to provide background information during the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan process. Traditional cultures managed and thrived in the highly seasonal environment of southern Alberta. A detailed, highly developed and thorough knowledge of the natural environment was required to sustain the economy and culture of indigenous people. The report uses examples of important plant and animal resources and sites to illustrate and demonstrate the breadth and depth of knowledge and information required by First Nations, and particularly Blackfoot, peoples concerns regarding air quality issues, it has become apparent that air issues should be considered in developing a comprehensive regional plan for the SSR.

Description

Large amounts of organic carbon are present in Alberta rangelands. One hectare of rangeland contains 50-200 tonnes of carbon in soil organic matter, 2-10 tonnes carbon in plant biomass and 1-2 tonnes carbon in litter. Total organic carbon levels in rangeland soils are considerably greater than the amount of carbon present in the atmosphere above these soils or exchanged with the atmosphere each year. Total organic carbon in the 7 million hectares of native pasture in Alberta is equivalent to about three times the current annual emissions of all greenhouse gases in Canada.

Description

This document is a collection of background material and basic groundwork to begin the process of considering appropriate grazing management for sage-grouse, an upland bird species that is in serious decline in Alberta and Saskatchewan. The purpose of the project was to gather existing knowledge about the grazing history and current grazing practices in the sage-grouse range area of southeastern Alberta. The report will provide a context for the sage-grouse recovery team when considering grazing processes and practices in relation to managing wildlife species on rangelands including species-at-risk.
