Description

The purpose of this project was to develop an understanding of the uncertainties in weather forecasting and propose a method of how the River Forecast Centre can manage those uncertainties when modeling rainfall scenarios and issuing flood advisories. Accurate flood forecasting requires accurate forecasts of rainfall amount, location, timing, and intensity. This project was designed to assess how well these rainfall forecast requirements are currently being met by the current suite of popular numerical weather prediction models, for extreme events in Alberta, and specifically for severe flood situations.

Description

The 2013 Flood Recovery Erosion Control (FREC) Program was originally designed to fund these critical projects and other erosion control priorities arising as a result of the 2013 flood events. The program has since been expanded to include some local flood control and community mitigation projects and additional funding (a total of $116 million) has been allocated to the program. The focus of the program remains on projects that can be completed by 2015. It is acknowledged that additional and more extensive recommendations on community flood mitigation may be forthcoming from the Premier's Advisory Panel and that there is likely a need for an on-going community mitigation program. It is also acknowledged that pre-existing erosion control infrastructure continues to be eligible for compensation under the existing Disaster Recovery Program (DRP).

Environmental Impact Assessment and associated applications pertaining to the proposed Coalspur Mines Ltd. Vista Coal Mine Project. The proposal is for a project area that would cover about 2,500 hectares and contains sites allocated for the coal mine and associated infrastructure. The project locatation is in Yellowhead County, approximately 10 km from the Hinton town boundary and extends away from Hinton to the southeast for about 12 km up to the McLeod River Valley. Coal bed methane (CBM) is natural gas – primarily methane – found on the surface and in the cracks of coal. In 2003, the Fort Assiniboine area was the focus of new industrial operations supporting CBM development. In this area of the province, existing oil and gas infrastructure was limited. The companies interested in pursuing CBM saw the opportunity to engage the community early, while at the same time, work with government to reduce the expected footprint.
