Description

Dam safety regulatory requirements are established based on the consequence classification of the structures and/or risks or hazards posed by the structures. Dam safety uses five consequence classifications for dams or canals based on the potential downstream consequences of a failure. The classifications are similar to those suggested by the Canadian Dam Association. The factors at risk that influence the consequence classification include downstream populations, the environment, the economy, cultural values and downstream infrastructure.

Dam safety regulatory requirements are established based on the consequence classification of the structures and/or risks or hazards posed by the structures. Dam safety uses five classifications for dams based on evaluation of the potential downstream consequences of failure in terms of three categories, namely: loss of life; environment and cultural values; and infrastructure and economics, similar to dam classification ratings suggested by the Canadian Dam Association.

Description

Alberta Environment owns 14 major dams, which are all classified as "High" to "Very High" consequence dams according to the Canadian Dam Association Guidelines and must therefore be designed to accommodate seismic ground motions resulting from earthquakes with an annual exceedance probability of 1:1000 to 1:10000 without an uncontrolled release of the reservoir. The objective of this study is to provide probabilistic-based ground motions that are derived using a consistent methodology and considering the latest seismicity information, which can be used for all of the 14 major dam sites. These ground motions could potentially be used for dam safety reviews of these facilities on a consistent seismic hazard basis.
