Description

The bridge inspection program is part of a comprehensive inventory and management data system. The three basic elements of the system are inventory, inspection and maintenance. The total system has developed in stages over a period of time. The Bridge Information System (BIS) was developed in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s and the Culvert Inventory System (CIS) was added later. In the mid 1980’s development was started on the Bridge Inspection and Maintenance System (BIM) and in 1987 the inspection component of BIM was introduced. Further development on the system has taken place over the years. In the late 1990’s, a corporate decision was made to combine all the Department information systems into a corporate database within the Transportation Infrastructure Management System (TIMS). The bridge inventory system (BIS and CIS) and the inspection system component (BIM) were moved into TIMS in 2005. The Full Cost Accounting Program is intended to promote fiscal planning amongst municipal waterworks systems. One of the factors contributing to the sustainability of a waterworks system is a sound financial plan that addresses the system's assets and operations. This in turn requires the costs associated with the provision of safe, secure supplies of drinking water to be readily available and determined in a consistent manner across the province. Municipalities are encouraged to participate in this voluntary program that provides waterworks owners with the tools necessary to report and track infrastructure, operational and administrative costs.

Typical management/maintenance strategies are outlined for the various structure types on the roadway network. The strategies have been developed with the view of maximising the return on the investment in the structure. It should be recognised that modifications to the suggested strategies may be necessary to accommodate site specific concerns or limitations.

The location is approximately 40 km northeast of the city of Edmonton in Sturgeon County. The EIA was deemed complete in 2007.
