The mandates and roles document outlines the duties, responsibilities and planning and reporting requirements of the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation. The Foundation is a public trust agency responsible for providing grants and technical assistance to heritage projects, making decisions on geographic names, hearing representations respecting the designation of historic resources, and any other activities deemed appropriate to enhance the preservation and appreciation of Alberta’s heritage.

Municipal heritage programs and local historic places are a key to smart, sustainable community development, and an opportunity for municipalities to participate in a national conservation initiative. This guide is intended to help municipalities: understand the processes and programs available for identifying, protecting and conserving local heritage; plan heritage initiatives and integrate these initiatives into other community plans and programs; identify significant historic places and determine ways to protect historic places; and access and develop conservation incentive programs. Under the Historical Resources Act, Alberta’s municipalities have the power to designate historic resources within their jurisdictions as Municipal Historic Resources. Some municipalities have found it helpful to create a heritage inventory that includes all historic places that are eligible for designation within the municipality. To guide municipalities in the selection of resources for inclusion in a municipal heritage inventory or designation as Municipal Historic Resources, the Government of Alberta's Historic Resources Management Branch has developed a standardized, three-part evaluation process, which is outlined in this booklet.
