In the early morning of August 26, 2006, a lookout tower employee at Athabasca Tower went missing under suspicious circumstances. The matter continues to be investigated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The Athabasca Tower is a frequent visitor location, and is located about 10 km northwest of Hinton close to Highway 40. In the fall of 2006, Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) made the decision to assemble an external Expert Panel to examine the August 2006 incident and provide recommendations to the department on Personal Safety and Site Security at the Athabasca Lookout.
