Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a fatal, transmissible, and progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting domestic cervids such as elk and deer. Recognising the seriousness of this reportable disease in the animal population, the federal government developed the CWD Herd Certification Program (HCP) in order to create clear and consistent national standards to support the domestic cervid industry through integrating good animal husbandry with sound biosecurity practices designed to avoid or minimise the spread of CWD. Provinces are empowereed to administer their own programs in an effort to tailor the Program to address specific regional needs while also maintaining conformity with national standards. This comprehensive manual provides clear and accurate advice to Alberta owners and cervid farm operators contemplating enrolment and those who are currently enrolled in the Program.

Coyote predation is a concern of all livestock producers. Various control methods are available for the control of coyotes, including toxicants to be used as a last resort. Animal Health and Assurance Branch of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development (AFRED) holds a registration for one toxicant for coyote control (Sodium Monofluoroacetate). In order to administer this restricted material safely, and limit the effects of toxicant on non-target wildlife, AFRED requires anyone issuing, using, or handling coyote control devices to be trained and possess a valid Form 7 Permit. The objective of this manual is to inform Form 7 Permit holders as to when, how, and what control devices to issue for a coyote control problem.
