Description

Written for the biofuel production facility or project developer, this protocol quantifies the emission reductions from the avoidance of fossil fuel consumption when the fossil fuel is replaced by biofuels on an equivalent energy potential basis. The protocol also includes reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions due to any heat/power production and electricity generation related to the process, and from the avoidance of landfilling any materials which may be diverted for conversion to biofuel. The protocol is not intended to be prescriptive, but instead serve as a generic “recipe” for biofuel facility owners and operators to follow in order to meet measurement, monitoring and GHG quantification requirements.

Coalbed gas (CBG) effectively consists of methane with minor amounts of ethane and propane, but no hydrogen sulphide (H2S). Recognition of CBG as an increasingly important energy resource has led to rapid expansion of exploration activity. Rapid development started in the 1980s in the western United States of America (USA), and has spread over the last six years to the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB). Increased production activities have brought increased awareness of environmental issues surrounding CBG development. In particular, reports of negative experiences associated with early CBG development in the USA have raised stakeholder concerns in Canada. Alberta CBG development has largely avoided the water resources issues experienced in the USA from CBG exploitation for two reasons. Although the proposed mill would be one of the least polluting bleached kraft pulp mills in the world, and even though it would have economic benefits associated with it, the Review Board recommends that it not be approved at this time. The major reason for this recommendation is the effluent which would be discharged to the Athabasca River, and in particular, its content of chlorinated organic compounds and the cumulative effects this effluent and that from other mills would have on the Athabasca-Peace River system. The Alberta-Pacific would use technology which would reduce the chlorinated organic compounds to a low concentration. However, the limited available data indicate that there are already measurable amounts of dioxins and furans in fish in the river system near existing mills and extending to more than 1000 km downstream.

Physical and chemical analysis of spent sand indicate that this material is very infertile. The spent sand samples analysed had an average pH of 7.2 and low Na content indicating that there was no residual problem resulting from the NaOH used in the oil production process. Freshly processed sand however does have a high pH and higher Na contents.
