Description

The scope of this protocol is limited to on-farm reductions of emissions from nitrogen sources and fuel use associated with the management of fertilizer, manure and crop residues for each annual or perennial crop type grown. Lands grazed by animals are excluded from this protocol as are greenhouse gas reductions associated with carbon sequestration in the soil and the off-site emission reductions affected by the manufacture and distribution of nitrogen fertilizers. The exclusion of off-site reductions of fertilizer manufacturing increases conservativeness in emission reduction calculations and limits the scope of quantification to those sources, sinks and/or reservoirs for which data are readily available.

This document establishes approved methodology for quantifying greenhouse gas emission reductions from energy efficiency measures implemented in commercial and institutional buildings. This quantification protocol can be used by project developers to quantify greenhouse gas emission reductions resulting from the implementation of energy conservation measures resulting from changes in management practices and/or actual building improvements in new and retrofit projects. Emissions reductions are calculated as a difference in energy use in the project condition compared to the baseline. New builds are required to establish a baseline based on applicable building codes and a project condition that incorporates changes beyond these minimum standards. Retrofit projects are required to establish a baseline based on a greater of one full calendar year or one full operating cycle of data for actual building operations. This protocol quantifies greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions that result from two related activities: the improvement in the fuel efficiency of natural gas combustion engines, and the capture of gases (primarily methane) normally vented to the atmosphere. The quantification approaches for measuring GHG reductions for both components are based on measurement and monitoring and thus provide a high level of accuracy. The protocol is written for those familiar with the operation of natural gas combustion engines and control systems that manage the fuel consumption for these engines.

Upon conversion, all methane that would have been vented will be replaced by compressed air.
