The 2015/2016 recession and the Fort Mc Murray forest fires caused Alberta’s labour productivity to decline again in 2016 as companies saw output tumble that year. As a result, the 5-year productivity growth rate fell to an increase of only 0.5% per year between 2011 and 2016.

The current recession caused Alberta’s labour productivity to decline sharply in 2015 as companies saw output fall that year while major payroll cuts were often postponed until 2016. As a result, the 5-year productivity growth rate fell from an average annual increase of 2.3% between 2009 and 2014 to only 0.6% per year between 2010 and 2015.
