Alberta’s population expanded significantly from 1980 to 2010. However, this growth was not evenly distributed among the eight economic regions of the provinces. This demographic spotlight examines the demographic trends in these regions, with the aim of identifying the driving factors behind each region’s population growth.

Between 2004 and 2006, Alberta’s economy expanded at an exceptionally rapid pace, attracting a record number of people to the province. The surge in oil sands investment and rapid growth in the Fort McMurray area helped create a perception that Fort McMurray was the main destination for migrants to Alberta. However, a detailed examination of migration trends reveals a more complex picture. This issue in the Demographic Spotlight series looks at migration flows over the past decade for three key Alberta census divisions: Wood Buffalo (Fort McMurray), Calgary and Edmonton. It finds that from 2000 to 2010, 80 per cent of migrants to Alberta settled in Calgary and Edmonton, while only four per cent of the total net migration settled in Wood Buffalo.
