Description

The Evan-Thomas Provincial Recreation Area Management Plan provides a long-term vision and day-to-day guidance for stewardship of this protected area. The plan outlines the type and extent of outdoor recreation and tourism opportunities, facilities and services including the delivery of heritage appreciation programs that assist Albertans and visitors to understand and appreciate our natural heritage while ensuring its ongoing preservation. The plan was prepared with extensive public input and will be reviewed and revised periodically. The Minister responsible for parks and protected areas has authorized the implementation of the management plan and retains the authority to amend or interpret its provisions.

The report covers three areas. First, it proposes a process to identify “special features” in Alberta and define their conservation status. This process is intended to complement the coarse filter or “top down” approach of Alberta’s Special Places program which attempts to capture environmental diversity by protecting broad landscapes or Level 1 Natural History Themes. The Special Features Report takes the opposite, or “bottom up”, approach to identify individual plant or animal species and communities, or landforms, that are limited in distribution or size, or are truly unique examples of Alberta’s natural diversity. It does not address species such as grizzly bears, wolves or caribou, which are dealt with in separate broader-based management plans. Second, the Report also provides a framework and criteria for evaluating special features and determining whether to recommend that they be considered for inclusion into the provincial system of protected areas. Description

The purpose of the Athabasca Sandhills Local Integrated Resource Plan is to provide direction for managing and using public land and resources in the planning area to provide a variety of benefits for Albertans. A resource is defined as anything perceived by society as having value, including such traditional resources as land, timber and minerals as well as less tangible resources without an obvious market value, such as unique ecosystems and recreational opportunities. Generally the plan maximizes benefits by specifying where, when and how resources will be managed and used.

Presents the results of a project to conduct terrain and vegetation resource inventories of the Notikewin South area. This information was required as data for land use evaluations and resource planning and management. The Notikewin South study area is located in northwestern Alberta and comprises some 15,000 square kilometres of land bounded on the south and east by the Peace River, on the west by the Alberta-British Columbia border and on the north by the Notikewin River.
