Description

Flood damage estimates are required for evaluating the cost effectiveness of projects designed to alleviate flood impacts. The Provincial Flood Damage Assessment Tool enables the standardized calculation of flood damages for varying levels of inundation within a community. Using this tool, a community-specific damage model for different flood frequencies has been developed for the City of Red Deer. Direct damages are presented as being caused by overland flooding and sewer backup/groundwater flooding. Indirect damages includes residential displacement, business interruption, and intangible impacts to households.

A water quality study was initiated on the Red Deer River to address water quality concerns experienced by the Anthony Henday Water Treatment Plant during periods of runoff. The study was designed to document longitudinal changes in water quality in the Red Deer River between the Dickson Dam and the City of Red Deer, and to evaluate the effects of contributions from the Little Red Deer and Medicine rivers on Red Deer River water quality during spring runoff.

Part 1 -The Haynes Creek Study was one of three studies funded under the Canada-Alberta Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture agreement (CAESA) to describe the effects of agriculture on surface waters in Alberta. This study was conducted in the Haynes Creek watershed to determine if runoff from cattle wintering grounds and from cultivated fields had a direct, measurable influence on stream water quality. The Haynes Creek watershed (east of the city of Red Deer) was selected because it was considered representative of very intensive agricultural activity on a landscape sensitive to water erosion. Part 2 - The Provincial Stream Survey was one of three studies funded under the Canada-Alberta Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture agreement (CAESA) to describe the effects of agriculture on surface waters in Alberta. This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along an approximate 9 km reach of Waskasoo Creek through Red Deer. The design discharge for Waskasoo Creek is 26.4 m³/s upstream of the Piper Creek confluence and 59.0 m³/s downstream, to the Red Deer River confluence. The original study was prepared in May 1992. The study reach was extended and flood hazard mapping was revised in June 1995. An addendum was published in March 1995. The original report and addendum constitute the revised final report. Flood information available after study completion may not be reflected in the current flood hazard study report or flood hazard mapping.
