In rural Alberta, 90 per cent of people use private well water supplies for domestic use (e.g., drinking, cooking, bathing). Domestic well water systems are not regulated by the provincial or federal governments. The Government of Alberta along with Alberta Health Services (AHS) provides water chemistry testing of private well water and information and advice on safe water for domestic purposes; however, it is the responsibility of well owners to ensure the quality and safety of their water supply. Water quality may be impacted by contamination from natural sources or human activities and cause noticeable aesthetic issues or potential health concerns. Water samples are collected and submitted by well owners through local AHS sites for analysis of routine chemistry and trace element parameters. The proposal is to develop a northeast mine pit extension (NPE Project) to sustain production rates of the approved North Mine Pit at the Horizon Oil Sands Processing Plant and Mine. The project is expected to include the following changes to the Horizon Mine: extension of the approved north mine pit to include the NPE Project area (1,015 ha); additional overburden storage areas (2,396 ha); and updated closure and reclamation plans. Description

The Subalpine Natural Subregion is a Rocky Mountain altitudinal vegetation zone extending from an elevation of 1575 m to 2175 m at its southernmost occurrence and 1365 m to 2000 m near Grande Cache. This approximation of the guide represents the analysis of over 3400 plots described in the Subalpine subregion. In this subregion it was found there were distinct differences between the community types and ecological sites between the Central and Northern Foothills and Mountains (west of Sundre, Hinton, Grande Cache and Jasper national park), and the Southern Rocky Mountains (south and west of Calgary and Banff national park). As a result the Subalpine plant communities are identified into two ecosections (south and north). The dominant plant species, canopy cover, environmental conditions and response to grazing, are outlined for each plant community type for each ecosection.

Contains materials used in targeted information sessions for the Surface Water Allocation Directive internal operational policy. Sessions held in Calgary and Edmonton, October 1 and 2, 2018 for stakeholders involved in Water Act licence applications. Environmental non-governmental organizations also participated in the information sessions and information letters were sent to Indigenous organizations and communities. Feedback was also received through an online survey open from October 1 to November 9, 2018, and via email and letters, leading to in-person follow up meetings when requested. The final policy provides operational water allocation decision guidance based on scientifically defensible rulesets to address the cumulative effects of water diversions while considering economic objectives.

Description

A May 2017 report from the Bow River Working Group provided advice on new reservoir storage on the Bow River upstream of Calgary to reduce flood and drought risk, and identified three reservoir options that warranted further study. In November 2018, Environment and Parks commissioned the development of conceptual engineering designs for the three options. This package contains a brochure and materials used at public information sessions held in September and October 2019 to discuss progress on the conceptual assessments for the three options, and next steps.
